        27. \u00a0 TEACH YOUR CHILD TO THINK<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        This chapter is a follow up to the previous chapter on Thoughts, Thinking and Imagination. The previous chapter on Thoughts, Thinking and Imagination was written about adult thinking for adults. This process, however, starts right at childhood, so it is important that this topic is given all the attention that is due at the earliest possible age.<\/span><\/p>\n

        As a husband or a wife we automatically have Multi Role Commitments, we are not confined to only being spouses, but, in addition, we are fathers and mothers to our children. With that, we become teachers, guides and guardians to the children that God has so graciously put in our stewardship. In this chapter the contents are aimed at tips that we can use to teach our children to think.<\/span><\/p>\n

        We must spent time to teach our children to think. Teaching our children to think is one of the greatest gifts we can bestow on them. We must fill them with good thinking otherwise bad thinking will quickly fill the void in their thought lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

        As parents we should cultivate and nurture the thinking of our children. We have a moral responsibility as parents to teach our children to reason and think. We must also realize that sharp reasoning does not come automatically with intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Try this simple test on your child and on yourself. A basket has ten black and eight blue socks. Without looking, how many socks must you take out to be sure you have a matched pair?<\/span><\/p>\n

        The correct answer is three.<\/span><\/p>\n

        This example does not call for academic skills, but it demands the ability to think and to stretch the mind beyond the obvious. Thinking is an area where children need help. Schools fill students with data. And the trend is moving more and more toward the examination results; gathering marks and certificate collection. But the essence of education is to use information to address new situations and questions. In the frenzy to get a seat in an educational institute, cramming knowledge can become a way of life. This trend may leave less time for thinking. In fact the aspect of real thinking may be pushed into the background and data collection may take up all the fore ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Consequently, many children can\u2019t apply reasonable thought to every day situations. It is not uncommon for a youngster to choose a bike by its color or by what model a friend has, rather than to think out more relevant considerations like price, durability or performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

        From the intellectual point of view, THINKING<\/strong> as well as the MEMORY<\/strong> related functions like data collection<\/strong>, data retention<\/strong>, data retrieval<\/strong> and data out-put, <\/strong>need to be interlined with the ANALYTICAL <\/strong>and CREATIVE<\/strong> faculties of the mind. For the development of any individual, all areas are important. Thinking is a \u201cpro-active\u201d component that set the Memory, Analytical and Creative faculties of the mind towards production. Thinking also interlines with the other dimensions of man like the HEART, BODY, SOUL and SPIRIT. It is thinking that helps us in our over all development of the other dimensions in ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Psychologists are of the opinion that a number of problems, including drug use, may occur because young people have not learned to measure action against consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n

        How can we nurture habits of serious, critical thought in our children? How can we help them sharpen their minds for a highly competitive future?<\/span><\/p>\n

        STEP ONE:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        a) Create a thinking atmosphere in your home<\/strong>. This is how you begin.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Examine your own thinking about thinking. Don\u2019t make the mistake of believing that an intelligent child is automatically a good thinker. In fact, intelligent people may be poor thinkers or lazy ones, because they are able to give quick answers. Mean while, the slow, reflective child \u00ad the boy or girl, teachers may chide for daydreaming, could often produce deeper insights. The personal history of inventors and other great people has supported this fact many times.<\/span><\/p>\n

        b) Start Early.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        A child can be challenged to think much earlier than most people think. You could ask a child for example, \u201cWhat would it be like, if the whole world is made of cake?\u201d You will be amazed at what comes out by way of answers and the reasoning that have gone behind the thought process.<\/span><\/p>\n

        One of the brilliant and successful businessmen, I deal with, has often left me awe struck by his amazing ability to think vertically and laterally. From the business point of view, vertical thinking is important, because it helps towards growth, profits, and future. But from the design point of view, lateral thinking is very important, chiefly because success means picking the right selection from may possible alternatives. But these alternatives have to be thought off. They are not always arranged out visibly, only waiting to be picked up.<\/span><\/p>\n

        One day I asked this man how he developed this fabulous ability to think the way he does. He said, when he was still very small his father used to sit down with his brother and him, and together they just brain stormed their way through problems. They had brain stormed their way about building swimming pools, pet houses, discussed what they would do if they had to get to the moon etc. Slowly from this background my friend set up a small manufacturing business at the age of eight to make clothes hangers out of wire. These he sold to his family members and relatives. From there on he moved to bigger things. Today he has restaurants and other ventures. The younger brother has also become a business wonder. Both of them have become the best un-dividable team.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Another friend of mine built in a fully power driven car at the age of twelve. He used a Chain\u00ad Saw motor to power his car. At twelve he made what most grown ups would not dare to dream about. Over the years this man and his younger brother and sister have built up the world largest pneumatic factory. Their companies are the market leaders in many aspects of control engineering products.<\/span><\/p>\n

        In both cases their parents encouraged them to think early. This is what every parent should strive for. The thinking awareness that we plant in our children will last them for a lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n

        c) Give children something to think about:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Take your kids to museums, read together, and watch TV side by side. Then talk about what you have seen and heard. Don\u2019t just walk through a museum and admire the exhibits. Throw out questions. Challenge their imaginations. The challenges you throw out, need not only center around the, \u201cplain\u201d and, \u201cpresent.\u201d Challenge them abstractly like, \u201cWhat would happen if the dinosaurs come back?\u201d Even things from the not so distant past could be interesting like, what would we do if there was no electricity.<\/span><\/p>\n

        d) Involve the whole family:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Good thinking habits can be learned in small Groups, with plenty of give and take. Even the youngest child has ideas that should be brought out and listened to. A formal curriculum isn\u2019t necessary. And can you think of a different way you might have answered the teacher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        e) Tell Jokes:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Humor can help teach children that there is more than one one-way of looking at things. Humor also gives them a light hearted and carefree way of remembering things. All people recall things better if it appeals to the mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Once you have established a thinking atmosphere, it\u2019s time for Step Two.<\/span><\/p>\n

        STEP TWO:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Teach your children how to think critically.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        a) Look at all sides:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Use the P M I – method<\/strong>. The P M I stand for PLUSES<\/strong>, MINUSES<\/strong> and INTERESTING POINTS<\/strong>. Any subject for thinking will have plus points, minus points and interesting points. Challenge your child to think about them.<\/span><\/p>\n

        b) Find patterns and threads:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Train them to see, how the new topic relates to what I learned last week? How does it fit with the questions coming up? Fitting bits of knowledge together is the foundation of education. By identifying patterns, we can avoid having to learn the same lessons again and again. Once a child recognizes the pattern of buying a bike he will know how to go about buying other things.<\/span><\/p>\n

        c) \u201cEven if it isn’t broken, fixes it\u201d:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Reverse the old axiom. The story of human progress has been one of overturning accepted ideas. People were content to light their houses with oil lamps until Edison came along. Accountants added with pen, ink and paper until the adding machine and then the calculator and now the computer has revolutionized the process.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Less set in their ways, young people are more willing to question, the way it has always been done. Parents should encourage them to make this a life long habit.<\/span><\/p>\n

        d) Ask unconventional questions:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Challenge your children with thoughts like this, \u201cSuppose all the cars were painted green what would be the plus, minus interesting points?\u201d (Plus would be, it would be cheaper, minus it would be difficult to find the car in a parking area and interesting points would be—-???<\/span><\/p>\n

        Questions that help children think, are not<\/strong> those questions with single answers like YES or NO.<\/span><\/p>\n

        A question like, \u201cWho was the first man on the moon?\u201d would challenge a child to remember pieces of information. It would develop the child\u2019s ability for data collection<\/strong>, data retention<\/strong>, data retrieval<\/strong> and data out-put.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        The next stage in the conversation would be to pose questions that help children to think. The question could be, to encourage interest in the topic, or towards puzzling or problematic ones. The choice of questions should encourage open- ended answers.<\/span><\/p>\n

        In this process, the child may come up with some totally unconventional idea. Watch out for this kind of a happening, because it reveals the child\u2019s ability towards, \u201cLateral Thinking\u201d or \u201cAssociative Thinking.\u201d Encourage the conversation, probe it, develop it further, find and supply supporting information, because, who knows, you may be talking to the next Albert Einstein, Madam Currie or some top echelon of \u201cTomorrow\u2019s World\u201d today itself. What is wonderful – is that you had perhaps set a brilliant mind in an encouraging and loving way towards great things.<\/span><\/p>\n

        e) Say what you mean:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Precise words not only prevent misinterpretations but also help in sharpen ideas. Is the boy down the street a, \u201cfriend\u201d or merely an, \u201cacquaintance?\u201d When a classmate is called a, \u201cnut,\u201d ask your child what does he or she mean. Defining terms is a tough mental discipline but it helps your child to clarify what he really thinks.<\/span><\/p>\n

        f) Seek a second opinion \u00ad and a third:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Children will often shake their own convictions, wait impatiently for another speaker to finish and then simply repeat what they said earlier. By not listening to others, they remain ignorant of ideas that could broaden their out look.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Get them to consider other points of view \u00adfor instance, when your child describes a neighborhood playmate as, \u201cdumb\u201d, ask a brother\u2019s or sister\u2019s opinion. The answers may open the first child\u2019s eyes to un-thought of possibilities. Similarly, watching and reading the news can teach the important lesson that those identical bits of evidence may be interpreted in different ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

        g) Wear the other person’s shoes:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Urge your child to try to understand how other people think and feel. The real essence of this teaching comes out when it is personalized like: \u201cIf you were in his place and some one did exactly the same thing to you, how would you feel? \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

        h) Write it down:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Writing is rigorous intellectual exercise, but it makes good practice for thinking. In fact, it is \u201cThinking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        i) Think ahead:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Encourage children to consider short-term, mid-term and long-term<\/strong>, out- comes. One of the most important questions to ask the child is, \u201cAnd then what?\u201d; \u201cDon\u2019t study for the exam \u00ad and then what?\u201d; \u201cKeep making faces at your playmates \u00ad and then what?\u201d It is difficult for young people to think about tomorrow or next year. Yet what happen today is bound to affect actions and thoughts of tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

        j) Study:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Thinking is no substitute for information and information is no substitute for thinking. Both are necessary for intellectual development. You cannot find a new application for electronics if you haven\u2019t learned electronics.<\/span><\/p>\n

        k) Keep at it:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Young people don\u2019t develop the habit of logical thought overnight. It is like learning a piano, the first time you play after a lesson, you may forget all you’ve learned and just thump away. But eventually the lessons will become a part of you.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Thinking takes practice but it’s worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n

        In a way, I cannot end this chapter without mentioning some things I learned from my children, my parents and Rose.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Ramona and Dominic went to different schools. Each school taught them a different grace before meals. Every ever so often the children were asked to lead the family in the grace before meals and everyone followed the leader\u2019s grace for that meal. Dominic\u2019s grace was a sing song rhyme which went like this,\u201d Thank you God for the world so sweet, Thank you God for the food we eat, Thank you God for my Mummy and Daddy. Thank you God for Grand Pa and Grand Ma(s) —-.<\/span><\/p>\n

        One day I felt there was an extra word that broke the rhyme, but the rhyme soon caught on again. So I asked him to say the grace alone again. I noticed the he did indeed add an extra word. He said thank you God for the food we ate \u201cYesterday\u201d —-. So I said: you should be thanking God for the food we eat today because we already thanked God for the food we had yesterday. He said: I ate yesterday so I am thanking God. I haven\u2019t yet eaten this food, so I have to thank Him after I have eaten. I had to explain to him that the food is his, – that no one is going to take it away from him. His sister is not going to grab something off his plate, And, Mama is certainly not going to do that, because if she wanted to do that she would have already eaten everything in the kitchen itself. And, if the gravy is not made of chocolate then there is no fear that Dada will take it away. His reasoning was amusing for us adults. He did displayed logics. Logics and analysis has become apart of him ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Ramona\u2019s approaches were educative in a caring way. Beside cleaning the dog\u2019s ears of wax, and occasionally brushing his teeth, she would think it was necessary to bring up the dog well, and give him a bath. In the bargain I think the dog thought he too should return her the favour by vigorously centrifuging the water off in a motion filled performance. Many robotic specialists would have been happy to come across the algorithms that enabled that form of canine gyration.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Ramona also thought it necessary to put all newly learnt words to usage. Most new words were used very accurately. There were, however, times when I would have settled for a different choice of words. For example on one Saturday night we spoke about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The next day as we passed by the church, she made it a point to instruct Dominic with all the authority of his one and a half year older sister<\/strong>, to behave himself even in the church compound, because you never know, Jesus may come lumbering<\/strong> out of the church. In an amusing way I was learning that children too grow up, and teach us things that we would have perhaps said the same way, many \u201cmoons\u201d ago. She later went on to love books, became a fast and very retentive reader.<\/span><\/p>\n

        I studied at Montfort in Yercaud, The first time I came home for holidays, from the Boarding school 3000 miles away, my Dad made, with his own hands, a dozen or more planes and suspended them from the ceiling with thin, almost invisible thread. I was nine at that time. My life with planes, however, had started long before that. My dad worked on the Airport and had sufficient authority to take me to see every new plane that came to the country. Right from the time I was 3 or 4 he had me brought over to the airport to have breakfast over there, everyday. I believed every Pilot and Air- hostess knew me. They were \u201cFriends of an aero dynamic dimension.\u201d Some even had blond hair and blue eyes. And all had twinkling eyes. Even though it was never explained to me, it was quite easy for me to figure that one out; after all, I had the expanse of four whole years of experience- on planet Earth. Actually, my reasoning was quite simple- if you flew too close to the sun your hair would turn golden; if you flew too long in the sky, your eyes would become blue and if you flew among of the twinkling stars, your eyes would twinkle too.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Part of my day was also spent on my back looking up at real (iron) planes flying in the sky. In my small way I marveled at how \u201ciron\u201d could fly. You see, in those days, in my whole life, there were only two metals \u2013 Iron and Gold. \u2013 Any metal that was not yellow was iron.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Now here was I, back home from school marveling at a room full of fighters. Propeller machines and jets had all come to see where I had gone all these months, and wondering why I did not come to see them. So they came to search for me. Dad was still Dad. While I was at boarding school, my Dad lovingly built all the planes, with his very own hands. As I looked around the room there were plane kits here and there, even under the pillow, and modelers paint and glue, tools and aircraft specifications of every know plane in the skies regardless of their country of manufacture. And a boy and his dad talked and talked amid the Star Fighters that flew at Mach 1. 4 and the famous Spitfires, Mustangs, the Migs and Mirages. In the distance of time, were the Phantom and the Mig 27 codename \u201cFoxbat.\u201d It was the home coming of a boy to the greatest human teacher he ever had \u2013 His Dad. When the boy turned, he saw his mum quietly taken in the atmosphere of awe that exists between the two men in her life \u2013 (who are, of course, all hers). Then she said, \u201cFood is ready\u201d \u2013 It is now her show time. \u2013 We had to go.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Today I build production and test machines of a different sort. Most are automatic. Sometimes I look into the distance with a thought model of a structure and I rotate it in 3D virtual space and look at it in my imagination from every angle. Like the boy who looked up at the sky and wondered how iron could fly. Then I look back in time and think of a man who used his ability to allow his son into his work spot everyday, to marvel at technology. We were \u201cthat team\u201d to discuss the future of \u201cFlying Jets.\u201d My feet, at that time, were not quite long enough to reach the ground when I sat on the office chair, so the feet swished in space as our discussion flew thought the skies, at heart lifting speeds. Those were serious moments when decisions had to be made with one elbow on the table. There were other times, my Dad spoke to me about more lofty matters and I could feel myself being pushed to the back pan of the seat with the force of many Gs. The feet would be stretched forward. A cockpit canopy, visible only to me, would stretch from one armrest of the chair to the other. These were times when the wing tips, the azimuth and Dad were the only standards of reference. Then when, I looked on one side of the chair, the wing would trace the sky, the Earth would tilt and slide away from the window and on the other side the Earth would fill up. That was a sure sign that we were taking a turn at Hyper- sonic speeds. It would call for split second decisions. These were moments when you flew between the Sky Above and the Mud Below. But then, together we could touch the sky. With gratitude I can say, \u201cDad, Mum you were my greatest human teachers. You were the \u2018Wind beneath my Wings\u2019\u2019. And in the same breath I say, \u201cThank you God for placing me in their care, in their stewardship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        Rose, of course, is the motivation to learn my way through life and to write a book. It brought home the fact that, being a wife is the toughest job of all. Things are not always sequenced for her \u2013 each child (and the husband) thinks she is there only for them. Even when she is away, it is not entirely impossible for the husband to ring up \u2013 on a long distance call! Just to enquire where his belt is, the one he has not worn for two years. \u2026. Of course the timing of these calls are always superb. The call will just happen to come with great urgency, just when important things need her entire attention. \u2026 And talking about \u201cbelts\u201d, she recalls, just last night, her discussion with the son who happens to think he is, \u201cHe-Man and Masters of the Universe\u201d and why the sword has to be tucked, through the shirt, and behind the back, with the handle sticking out, even at meal times. She is promptly told, If pants had belt loops and belts were made available, there would be another way around the \u201cState of Readiness.\u201d Life for her is always on the fast track. And she wonders, whether it was necessary for the husband to use the satellite, instead of looking around the house first? Sometimes it seems difficult for her to imagine how wonderful and meaningful she really is, because there are not too many ways for husbands (like me), to say it. So, in a \u201cFlintstone\u201d like manner, tools of the \u201cNew Stone Age\u201d are used to carve books out. These may be artless structures, but imperceptibly, they somehow show signs of (great) affections. \u2013 Without her there would be no book.<\/span><\/p>\n

        On a more serious note, she took on some very difficult tasks and decisions when life had brought some very tough and time bound trials across our path. These were often under situations were money was scarce. Her ability to face up to these challenges was very commendable. Before our Silver Jubilee this book will be ready.<\/span><\/p>\n
