Words like un-lovingness, meanness and cruelty are not nice words. We want to recoil from them. We do not like them to appear in books on marriage \u00ad and rightly so. When we are looking for the surprises that cause marriage to break up, we unfortunately find that such factors like meanness un-lovingness and cruelty do exert their sphere of influence and are directly or indirectly responsible for making things to go out of hand. No matter how we feel about such words it is better to face what there is to face, and examine it as we have examined so many other topics in this book.<\/span><\/p>\n We are looking and trying to understand what drives good people to irrational (and often) uncharitable behavior \u00ad Behavior that some times leads to grave (and sometimes) irreparable damage. We are trying to throw light on some of the surprise about the bad behavior of people who are normally quite and good-natured. We are trying to understand how people change their life long yard stick of good behavior \u00ad \u201cWhat\u201d makes them do bad?<\/span><\/p>\n We also trying to understand what makes these people revert back to normal behavior after reconciliation has taken place. We are trying to understand how this un-lovingness, meanness and cruel behavior \u201chappened\u201d and \u201chow it disappears.\u201d It is almost like turning a switch ON or OFF. If this is the case then the next question would be \u201cWho or What\u201d turns the switch ON or OFF.<\/span><\/p>\n For one thing, we all like to believe that bad things and bad temptations only happen to other people and not to us. But in all fairness to ourselves we must be clever enough to be aware that the same elements of temptations that befell others can befall us. We have to be honest and humble enough to see that. We must be aware that we are faced up against a cunning and resourceful foe. We must be aware that factors like pride<\/strong> have toppled good people from their high positions. In fact, the first sin that took place was pride, some angels succumbed to pride and immediately hell was created. These once heavenly angels became devils.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAND HE (JESUS) SAID TO THEM, I SAW SATAN FALL LIKE LIGHTENING FROM HEAVEN.\u201d <\/strong>Luke 10:18, <\/strong>Lukas<\/strong> 10:18<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u201eDa sagte er zu ihnen: Ich sah den Satan wie einen Blitz vom Himmel fallen.\u201c<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n In the words of the Bible puts it very clearly to us:<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWE DO NOT WRESTLE AGAINST FLESH AND BLOOD, BUT AGAINST PRINCIPALITIES, AGAINST POWERS, AGAINST THE RULERS OF DARKNESS OF THIS AGE, AGAINST SPIRITUAL HOSTS OF WICKEDNESS IN HEAVENLY PLACES.\u201d <\/strong>Ephesians 6:12, <\/strong>Epheser<\/strong> 6:12.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n 12 \u201eDenn wir haben nicht gegen Menschen aus Fleisch und Blut zu k\u00e4mpfen, sondern gegen die F\u00fcrsten und Gewalten, gegen die Beherrscher dieser finsteren Welt, gegen die b\u00f6sen Geister des himmlischen Bereichs.\u201c<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n It is for this reason that the Bible tells us:<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cPUT ON THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD, THAT YOU MAY BE ABLE TO STAND AGAINST THE WILES OF THE DEVIL.\u201d <\/strong>Ephesians 6:11<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n 11 \u201eZieht die R\u00fcstung Gottes an, damit ihr den listigen Anschl\u00e4gen des Teufels widerstehen k\u00f6nnt.\u201c Epheser 6:11<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n We have to pray to God all the time. In this way we humanly do all, we possibly can do to keep all the wiles of the devil out of our life. We have to pray that we are spared the misfortune of guilt and remorse of conscience.<\/span><\/p>\n There are any number of unfortunate people who were gripped by these wiles and without knowing it they become brutes to their spouses, driving them to tension, distress, unhappiness, despair doing everything in its might to damage themselves, their families, their property. As we already mentioned in the last chapter many of the tactics employed were within the framework of legally accepted norms and opinions. Many of them had a fair amount of sophistication tactics that could be labeled as, \u201cONE\u2019S RIGHTS\u201d \u00ad and all this strife while the partner was suffering the wrongs. \u201cContest\u201d became the battle cry. These sly and sophisticated wiles cloud, distract and distort people\u2019s attempts to love the spouse. These wiles are so vicious that they can drive the other person to accidents, disabilities, death or even suicide. The bottom line of these wiles is \u201cDestruction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n We must remember when a person does some thing destructive, it was not ‘love\u2019 that drove the person to it, nor was it the lack of ‘love\u2019 (passive). It was the active and deliberate acts of cruelty that drove the other person to such a drastic action. Marriage is not beyond the effects of cruelty. This is why PRAYER is essential.<\/span><\/p>\n To somewhat lesser extents we find that very clever, knowledgeable, skillful, well-placed individuals have turned to discouragement, letting go of their job, drinking or turning to some other vice. Most were basically not inclined to vices nor were they feeble minded or weak willed to take any vices up. These actions were to a milder extent their, \u201cSigning-Off\u201d, their way of \u201cGiving-Up.\u201d They probably didn’t have courage to do more drastic things towards others so they turned inwards. Regardless of whether one\u2019s efforts are directed inwards or outwards, the net result is destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n People, who are very well acquainted with the couple in marital difficulty, will see the deterioration in both partners. Both suffer. But what surprises the friends, is the blindness and lack of feeling which grips the victim and drives him or her in spite of hardship and fears, to keep on being unloving, mean or down right cruel.<\/span><\/p>\n If we look at the chemistry of such behavior we find FEELINGS on one side. These feelings can be traced to ego, hurt; resentment, spite, anger, malice etc. , on the other side we see DRASTIC ACTION. The catalyst that moves negative feelings into drastic action is CRUELTY. This catalyst works regardless of whether feeling and action are in one and the same person to two different persons.<\/span><\/p>\n The reason why these factors cause us to be surprised is:<\/span><\/p>\n (1) Because we think we are not so bad, so these negative influences cannot affect us.<\/span><\/p>\n (2) Because these negative influences of un-lovingness, meanness and cruelty, especially cruelty does not operate as single entities. They need \u201cA CONSTELLATION OF FACTORS\u201d to function<\/strong>. Fortunately for most of us the constellation of factors is always incomplete so we seldom ever get really bad. Maybe we would reach a stage of un-lovingness and no more. We should really be thankful to God that we are saved by an incomplete \u2018constellation of factors\u2019. But even this shallow level causes enough surprises in marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n What is this CONSTELLATION OF FACTORS? This is difficult to itemize because it is different from one person to another and from one situation to another. Maybe an illustration will help to bring it out. For this purpose we will forget marriage for a while and look at a real extreme situation where the constellation of factors makes cruelty thrive. For this we can look at the history books. We find that suddenly good, modern, civilized, prosperous, religious, practicing nations, suddenly find themselves locked into the grip of war. Somehow, a dictator comes into being and in no time, a bunch of like-minded, but vicious people get drawn to him. Then more and more like-minded people get attracted to them. All are ready to help and support the dictator\u2019s flagitious ambitions. Under this umbrella of duty and authority<\/strong> they give full vent to use the situation to uphold cruelty in the name of duty and even go on to pursue crimes of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n The Second World War gave a sad but highly eye opening insight to the mechanics of mass cruelty. I mention the Second World War because comparatively more has been documented about it, than perhaps any other war in history. Both the statistics and the variety of coverage of the Second World War have been unparalleled. We are not trying to see the war as a whole, but just a generalized case history of war criminals. We are trying to see the relationship of cruelty of some individuals. For one thing we are surprised that a vast majority of these people behaved in seemingly ordinary ways before the war. They followed the normal standards of behavior and decency. At least they conformed to acceptable standards. A lot of them did not have marked or pronounce standards of ‘showing-off \u2018or being \u2018bullies\u2019. Many had wives and children, which they brought up in accordance to their religious and traditional customs.<\/span><\/p>\n It was suddenly when they found:<\/span><\/p>\n These series of possibilities completed the constellation of factors that made it possible to let cruelty push decency away and take control.<\/span><\/p>\n Very surprisingly, these very same people who were noted for their ferociousness and brutality on the war front, these cruel people, to whom blood, murder and rape were something to be reveled at, when they came home, on leave or vacation, they were totally different personalities. To say the least, they were kind husbands, loving fathers and helpful neighbors.<\/span><\/p>\n Equally surprising was the fact that once the leave or vacation was over and they were back in uniform with their buddies on some \u2018away from home\u2019 field, they reverted back to being brutes. They literally switched from Good to Bad and vice versa merely by the environment and company. Strange as it may sound, the uniform had an absolutely brutalizing effect. The uniform gave them a sense of legality and invincibility. If we observe history of many nations and ages this seems to be the case. In fact certain tropical nations of yester years did not wear too many clothes, because it was too hot. Even these people found a way to create this illusion of legality and invincibility by wearing masks. With the mask they behaved as brutes and without it they reverted back to normal behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n The only logical explanation is that in addition to giving a good image of themselves in their hometown, the constellation of factors was not complete. The same behavior of being back to normal was seen after the war was over. There is always an element of trying to show others in the hometown, that they are good. As well as, there is also the need to try and hide ones war crimes. In spite of the cover up and deceptive maneuvers, something was not complete in the constellation of factors, that is why they did not carry on their inhuman behavior. One typical missing factor could have been the absence of an evil leader.<\/span><\/p>\n We should be aware of the fact that these people succumbed to some form of evil. that evil as still around. We should not brush this aside with a statement like, \u201cOnly certain people are prone to such things, and, that is because they are made that way.\u201d It is nice to believe that. But is that the total explanation? Or is that only a part of the explanation? All babies (and even these bad people, when they were babies) were pure and innocent. Some thing in the course of their life influenced them wrongly.<\/span><\/p>\n The key people responsible for such crimes were not people who were merely trying to get a little land for cultivation or plundering just to increase their material possessions. Their came a time when these people had more wealth than they could ever use. Many had more than sufficient power. Many didn\u2019t have the health to eat normal ordinary food. Most suffered tremendously and strong medicines were the only thing to keep them alive. Yet, in spite of all these good and bad points, they still carried on their relentless obsessions in order to wound their fellow human beings. Even impending defeat, disgrace and death could not make them stop being cruel. This is the grip evil exerted on them. A criminologist once explained that, at first, these people actually abhorred crime, but when they remained long enough in it, they became accustomed to it and endured it. If they reminded in contact with it even longer, they finally embraced it and become influenced by it. In a way this is exactly the same psychological pattern with people and drinking habit; smoking; gambling; lusting in their mind and any other vice. They depend on it, they crave it, they know it is wrong and yet they cannot free themselves from it.<\/span><\/p>\n We have, through above citation of a war situation seen how gripping these factors are.
