The next three chapters is an attempt to throw light on explaining the modalities that bring the surprise on. I have put this explanation towards the end of the book because a fair amount of groundwork had to be built up before going into the areas of surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For a long time I was baffled at why good marriage can break up. I was interested to find out what caused this surprising turn in a normal marriage. When I say, normal marriage, I mean a marriage where both partners are good; where they got married on their own free will and had a fairly good, idea of each other. As opposed to what I call \u2018normal\u2019 would be a situation where people got married because of external pressures, for example, because a baby was on the way; or because one felt the urgency to get married because another chance, like this one would never come again; or getting too old; or because of parental pressures etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The whole element of surprise as mentioned in the \u2018Prologue\u2019 and &#8216;Conflict and Surprises\u2019, does not center on people who are unemployed, uneducated etc. , but rather it centers around people who are socially at an advantage like: they are educated; in good jobs; they come from good families; there are no previous cases of separation in their family tree or present family circle; where they consciously practice their religion, where they are intelligent, pleasing and law abiding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When a marriage breaks up the cause factors can broadly be classified into two major groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"auto-style1\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The obvious factors (knowing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The unobvious factors (feeling)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The obvious factors are like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"auto-style1\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Difficulties \u00ad for example financial difficulties.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Differences &#8211; In opinion, out look, up bringing, religion, beliefs, customs, traditions etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unacceptable factors \u00ad habits, vices, friends, in-laws, customs, traditions etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By virtue of the fact that these factors are obvious, people can quickly see what is troubling the marriage. Even though the factors may not be removable, talking reason is possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The unobvious factors as the term implies are not visible even to each other themselves. They cannot understand \u201cwhat\u201d or \u201cwhy\u201d something does not feel right with their relationship, (It is feeling as opposed to knowing). They do not feel comfortable, safe, secure, accepted, and trusted. It is because of these feelings and not because of knowing exactly what the matter is, that they become uneasy and irritated. Suggestions or attempts to talk reason are met with opposition. They are not opposing reasoning; in fact they are actually searching for reasons. What they are expressing through the opposition is that they don\u2019t know how to process those unexplainable feeling in the light of clear-cut reasoning. It is this helplessness that frustrates them. This helplessness is even more aggravating for them because in other matters of reasoning they are considered successful. They miss the point because they are trying to apply their INTELLECTUAL REASONING (of which they maybe very successful) into a problem area where FEELING and EMOTIONS are involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Whether we like it or not every one of us come across all kinds of factors and influences in life. Some factors we find to be to our advantage while others are to our disadvantage. With each factor there are a wide range of shades and hues, which lend not only color, but complications as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the factors that a person on this human pilgrimage will face is moments of uncertainties. Uncertainties will give rise to FEAR; ANXIOUSNESS both these are feelings. They can be very gripping if we do not know what to do about them. Let us define one of these feeling right now and the second one as we move further into the text, we will also define THREAT right now:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FEAR is an emotion caused by impeding evil, alarm or dread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">THREAT is a declaration of intention to punish or hurt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before we see what to do about these two types of factors, let us see what each one leads to in the context of marriage:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In a normal every day parlance, we have formed a definite ideas of what we conceptualize under the words \u201cFear\u201d and \u201cThreat\u201d we derive these ideas predominantly from the medium we hear like the TV and Radio. We also get it from what we read like magazines and books. If we bring all these media influences on to one common platform, they all fall under the category of what may termed as sensational news. The setting of such writing and portrayals is rooted in crises, uprising, war, acts of terror or violence. The text is moved with a strong aim to write and portray the news material from the selling point of view. The effectiveness of the news medium is how well they clothe and spice up the events with the sensationalism. Why? Because sensationalism sells well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Words like FEAR and THREAT are almost always associated with violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In today\u2019s marriages, especially the marriage settings of which I have stated in this book, the association of violence with FEAR and THREAT is not commonplace. This book is not written about some tribal marriage that are only exposed to a customs associated with \u201cJungle-Laws\u201d, neither are they about the lawless Wild West, where Fast Draw and Gun Law, mingle side by side with ego and anarchy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today\u2019s marriage partners, especially for whom this book is directed are normal, law abiding, God fearing people with the will and the wish for a peaceful marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today\u2019s husband in the civilized world is basically an honest, hand working person trying to make and maintain a standard of living for his family and himself. He has no time or energy to devote to making enemies with his wife; in fact he is more than happy to enlist her support. Today\u2019s wives are equally well intentioned and trying to live within their family standard and income. Besides her tasks are many fold: wife; mother; teacher; assistant; homemaker. . . . The list is long. In addition she is expected to quickly change from one role to another at short notice. She also has no time or energy to devote to making enemies with her husband. She would like to have his support-often more than anything else in the world! If this is the situation of today\u2019s marriage partners, where does the question of FEAR and THREAT come in?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Violence in the FEAR and THREAT situations of the normal marriage situations is practically non-existent. Especially to the types of people for whom this book is written. Even though violence maybe absent, Today\u2019s normal marriage partners do face a very wide variety of subtle and sophisticated manifestations of FEAR and THREAT. Today FEAR and THREAT is so well disguised that surprises are understandable. For example, Partners fear that their spouses may get promoted and go beyond their ability to keep up; News media and gossip mention how people life savings were split because of divorce or separation. Fear has many factors and we can only mention a few; Fear of loss of love; Fear of criticism; Fear of loss of ability; Fear of what ill health will do the affections of the Partner; Fear of rejection etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">People feel threatened because of these fears and they unconsciously react in subtle ways. These reactions are so subtle that it may not be large enough to address the intellect or the reasoning strata of the other person consciously, but it is nevertheless enough to be perceived by the emotional strata of the other person. Some of these fears are only potential; others are expected; and a wide number are imaginary, but the dialogue between the \u201cHeart\u201d and the uncontrolled \u201cMind\u201d can give rise to a FEAR-THREAT situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Possessiveness, jealousy; envy can also bring a Fear-Threat situation. Whatever be the factors mentioned above, none of these are developments have evolved out of modern times. They were always there. The only thing, which seems to have changed considerably, is that the elementary form of violence is no longer acceptable, but is replaced by subtle and sophisticated challenges. There is also more freedom of thought and expression, which is basically good. But this freedom calls of more discretion and more wisdom in its usage. You are now called to use your skills to chart your own course through life\u2019s tests and challenges, including the Fear-Threat situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The dynamics of Fear-Threat situations are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Fear leads to threat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; The effect of these two components in the other person is exactly mirror-imaged. \u00ad Threat is received and turned into fear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; The echo is that the receiver sends out his or her own version of a new or counter threat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; The result is a continual transmission of Fear and Threats. Most of this is non-verbal and a large number is so small that they never seem significant enough to alert the intellect, but the emotion takes a lot in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ANXIOUSNESS develops as a result of Fear-Threat situations at some stage; the messages that are perceived are processed in the mind. The result could be a call for ACTION.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Action in this case maybe either to \u201cfight\u201d or to \u201crun.\u201d A rash precipitation into action is termed as PANIC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In married life &#8216;Love\u2019 is the most important emotional factor. It is love that unifies a marriage. It is love that keeps a marriage going. It is with more love that a marriage grows and becomes richer. It is with still more love that the faults differences become bearable. It is in this garden of love as it were that slyly and unnoticeably a small thought creeps in and causes fear. And from there on the dynamics of the Fear-Threat situation takes over. What often happens in a marriage situation is not only a simple dynamics of a back of forth of Fear and Threat, Often there are the additional complications made by triangular formations. The triangle maybe caused by a third person. A colleague, a friend; an in-law or a thing like Job, Career, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the peculiar traits of a marital Fear-Threat situation is that it creates an inductive fear to others in similar situations. This is the reason why stable and happily married friends in the same age group and from the same background feel a unique sense of uneasiness and insecurity in the presence of divorced and separated persons. They are unconsciously shunning Fear and Threat vibrations. Life is a continual process where we have to deal with all the factors that can influence us. We are to give importance to some factors and cut others right down to the level of pointers and indicators that tell us when we are swaying off our course. We need these factors so that we can regulate our course back on to our objectives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In FEAR-THREAT Relationship TRIANGLES the sides of these are: HUSBAND \u00ad WIFE \u00ad LOVER (actual or suspected). In a situation like this, there is going to be emotional disturbances. The emotional out-looks are different and will defer basically depending on the MAN-WOMAN differences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In such cases, the disturbance components are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"auto-style1\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Emotion attachment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Physical attachment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For example: If the Triangle is: Husband-Wife-Other Man. The husband fears and is threatened more by the physical attachment of the other man to his wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the other hand if the Triangle is: Husband-Wife-Other Women. The wife would fear and be threatened more by the husband&#8217;s emotional attachment to the other women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of our objectives is to break the fear-threat situation in our marriage as also in other areas of our human inter relationship. The Bible tells us surprising a lot of ways to break the Fear-Threat strains. Often the approach of the Bible sounds paradoxical to us until we begin to think deeply. Let us only consider two teachings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"auto-style1\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wives are subject to your own husbands. Husbands love your wives. Wives, especially the educated, financially independent ones of today don\u2019t like this. It seem out of tune to what the world is yelling about. The world is yelling about the emancipation of women. Women are called to assert their rights even in the home. This doesn&#8217;t work well at all, a fear-threat situation begins to form in the sense that the husband subtly fears that his headship is threatened, and he withdraws love subtly. She perceives the threat of loss of love and so it develops further and furthers gradually all kinds of complications form leading to the Fear-Threat situations. In this context, the Bible has given a clear-cut formula, Wives submit to your own husband AND husbands love your wives. By following this teaching, the Fear- Threat situations are broken immediately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Bible tells us \u201cLove your enemies.\u201d The whole complicated process which upholds fear and threats are broken because there are no more mirrors imaging of new threats or counter threats taking place.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Bible has a lot of simple straightforward formulas, which sound paradoxical to us at first. We should think about them quietly and seriously because they hold the keys to success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The world spends fortunes to overcome fear and anxiousness, \u00ad Pills; Prescriptions and Drug manufactures make financial empires out of people seeking a solution. Yet most people are still uncertain whether their money buys them what they are looking for. The Bible tells us what we can do about it:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">REGARDING FEAR<strong>: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>\u201cTHERE IS NO FEAR IN LOVE, BUT PERFECT LOVE CASTS OUT FEAR, BECAUSE FEAR INVOLVES TORMENT.
